President Tsai Ing-wen of Taiwan took the lead in the voting on Saturday. This election is closely watched by Beijing.
The voting ended one hour after 4pm local time. According to the preliminary voting results of three Taiwanese TV stations, Tsai led the opposition Kuomintang’s main opponent Han Yu by more than 500,000 votes.
The final result is expected to be announced on Saturday evening. Cai will hold a press conference at eight o’clock in the evening.
The turmoil in China and Hong Kong has become the main content of the general election because Beijing has stepped up its efforts to push Taiwan to accept its rule through military intimidation and the provision of a “one country, two systems” model.
